Can you tell what it is yet? Ah you’ve already scrolled down and spoiled it. Yes, the bread machine finally gave up the ghost and started grinding the non-stick part of where the paddle meets the inner surface and hey presto – poisoned dough! Luckily it’s easy to spot as you see grey swirls in your dough – time to throw that sucker away.
When I first wrote this blog I was of the opinion that a cheap bread machine was good for mixing the dough. I can confirm I was right all along – they really are great for that job but the trouble was this was our 3rd machine in about 6 years and was dumped for the same reason each time. Obviously the manufacturers are either unaware of this problem or they are and don’t care. Either way the price has shot up in percentage terms (£25 now up to £40) so I decided I’d go for a big-ass mixer and here she is, the Grundig blah-di-blah…hang on… model number is UM9140 and I got it for £129 delivered from Ebuyer.
And here she is… mixing some onion dough up. I have to admit, I get mesmerised watching the dough-hook’s planetary mixing action. I’m easily pleased.
It’s noisy, but then again so are a lot of kitchen appliances with ruddy great motors in them – I just turn the radio up for 15 minutes while it’s mixing the dough.
Verdict: Mixes faster than the bread machine did, even at the lowest speed it chucks the dough around. If it lasts 6 years it will even out the cost of 3 bread machines that last 2 years each.
